What is an Annual Well Woman Exam?
An annual well woman exam is a preventive healthcare visit focused entirely on your reproductive health, wellness, and long-term vitality. This yearly checkup is separate from visits for specific illnesses or injuries. It serves as a proactive way to track changes in your body, screen for life-threatening conditions early, and optimize your health at every stage of life—from adolescence through menopause and beyond.
At Miami Women’s Center, our annual wellness exams are tailored to your unique age, risk factors, and lifestyle, providing you with a comfortable, comprehensive, and compassionate space to manage your preventive health.
Request an AppointmentFrequently Asked Questions About Well Woman Exams
At what age should a woman start getting annual wellness exams?
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that young women schedule their first gynecological visit between the ages of 13 and 15. While a pelvic exam is rarely necessary during these initial adolescent visits, the appointment establishes a baseline relationship with a provider and focuses heavily on health education, period management, and preventive vaccinations like the HPV vaccine.
Do I need a Pap smear every single year?
No. Under current medical guidelines, most low-risk women do not need a Pap smear every year. For women aged 21 to 29, a Pap smear is typically recommended every 3 years. For women aged 30 to 65, routine screening shifts to a Pap smear combined with HPV testing every 5 years, or a Pap smear alone every 3 years. However, you still need an annual well woman exam every year to monitor other vital areas of your health, even if a Pap smear is not due.
What should I do to prepare for my wellness exam?
To ensure the most accurate results for your screenings, try to schedule your appointment for a time when you are not on your menstrual period. Additionally, avoid sexual intercourse, douching, or using vaginal creams, suppositories, or tampons for 48 hours prior to your exam, as these can interfere with cell collection during your pelvic screening.
What happens if my well woman screening results are abnormal?
An abnormal result—such as an irregular Pap smear or a lump found during a breast exam—does not automatically mean you have cancer or a severe condition. It simply means a closer look is needed. The clinical team at Miami Women’s Center will guide you through clear next steps, which may include a diagnostic ultrasound, an advanced colposcopy, or a follow-up screening.
