Many women feel uncertain about what happens during an annual well-woman exam. At Miami Women's Center, we believe informed patients are empowered patients. Here's a complete walkthrough of what you can expect.
Medical History Review
Your provider will ask about your current medications, family medical history, menstrual cycle patterns, sexual health, and any symptoms you've been experiencing. This is a great time to bring up anything that has been on your mind.
Physical Examination
Your exam will typically include:
- Blood pressure and vital signs check
- Breast exam — checking for lumps or abnormalities
- Pelvic exam — examining your uterus, ovaries, and vagina
- Pap smear — if you are 21 or older, to screen for cervical cancer
- HPV testing — often combined with the Pap smear for women 30 and older
STI Screening
We can screen for a full panel of sexually transmitted infections during your annual visit, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis B, and HIV.
Contraception and Reproductive Planning
This is also an ideal time to discuss your contraception options or reproductive goals, whether you are trying to conceive or prevent pregnancy.
