Surgical Abortion in Miami
When medical abortion isn’t appropriate or you prefer a surgical approach, a surgical abortion is a safe option in a controlled clinical setting. At Miami Women’s Center, we provide surgical abortions within the legal window, with patient comfort, safety, and dignity guiding every step. If you’d prefer a non-surgical option, we also offer the abortion pill.
Request an AppointmentFlorida Legal Context
As of May 1, 2024, Florida law prohibits most abortions after 6 weeks of gestation, calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period. This restriction applies to both medical and surgical abortion methods. Exceptions may exist in narrow circumstances, such as to save the life of the pregnant person, for fatal fetal anomalies, or if the pregnancy results from rape, incest, or human trafficking (with proper documentation) under certain conditions.
What to Expect
Who Qualifies?
You may qualify for a surgical abortion if:
- You are within the legally allowed gestational age (up to 6 weeks under Florida’s law)
- You have had an ultrasound confirming an intrauterine pregnancy
- You have no contraindications (such as certain uterine anomalies, bleeding disorders, or medical conditions)
- You are able to attend all required clinic visits (pre-procedure, procedure day, follow-up)
If you are beyond the 6-week limit, we can discuss whether an exception applies based on your medical or personal circumstances, or refer you to alternate options if possible.
The Procedure
Pre-Procedure Evaluation: You’ll begin with a consultation in which we review your medical history, perform lab work and an ultrasound, discuss anesthesia and sedation options, and answer all your questions.
Consent & Requirements: You will sign informed consent. Florida law requires at least 24 hours between your consultation and the procedure (with some limited exceptions).
Procedure Day: On the day of surgery, you’ll arrive at the clinic, be prepared, and given medication or sedation to ensure your comfort. The surgical abortion is performed using gentle suction (vacuum aspiration) and may include dilation of the cervix if needed.
Post-Procedure Recovery: After the procedure, you will rest in recovery and be monitored for a short period. You’ll receive aftercare instructions, pain management guidance, and emergency contact information.
Considerations
Surgical abortions are very safe when performed by experienced providers in a clinical setting, but like any procedure, there are potential risks: infection, an incomplete procedure requiring follow-up, heavy or prolonged bleeding, uterine perforation (rare), anesthesia or sedation complications, and cervical injury. We take every precaution to minimize these risks and provide clear instructions on when to seek medical attention.
Recovery & Aftercare
You may experience cramping and light bleeding or spotting for several days. Most patients recover quickly, often returning to daily routines within 24–48 hours, depending on sedation and individual factors. We will schedule a follow-up appointment (ultrasound or clinical check) to confirm the abortion is complete and that your reproductive health remains intact. You’ll also receive guidance on contraception, emotional support, and any needed referrals.
Frequently Asked Questions About Surgical Abortion
Surgical Abortion Care at Miami Women’s Center
How is a surgical abortion performed?
The procedure uses gentle suction, known as vacuum aspiration, to empty the uterus, and may include cervical dilation if needed. It’s performed in a controlled clinical setting with medication or sedation to keep you comfortable throughout.
Will I be asleep during the procedure?
Sedation and anesthesia options are discussed at your pre-procedure evaluation and tailored to your comfort level and medical history — some patients choose light sedation, while others prefer minimal medication.
How long does the procedure and recovery take?
The procedure itself is typically brief, and most patients rest in a monitored recovery area for a short period afterward before heading home. Full return to daily routines usually happens within 24–48 hours, depending on sedation and individual recovery.
Is surgical abortion safer than the abortion pill?
Both methods are considered very safe when performed or managed by experienced providers. The right choice depends on your gestational age, medical history, and personal preference — your provider can help you compare the abortion pill and surgical options directly.
What symptoms after the procedure should prompt me to call the clinic?
Contact us promptly for heavy bleeding that soaks through pads quickly, fever, severe abdominal pain not relieved by medication, or any symptoms that feel different from what was described during your aftercare instructions.
Do I need someone to accompany me to the appointment?
If you receive sedation, we recommend arranging for someone to drive you home afterward. Support persons are welcome, though they may need to wait in the lobby during parts of the procedure.
When can I resume normal activity, exercise, and sexual activity?
Most patients can resume light activity within a day or two, but your provider will give you specific timelines for exercise and sexual activity at your follow-up visit based on how your recovery is progressing.
Your Support & Care
You do not have to face this alone. We are committed to providing privacy, respect, and nonjudgmental care; clear explanations of the procedure, risks, and alternatives; post-care support and follow-up; and referrals for support if you’re past the legal limit or an exception is needed.
