Frequently Asked Questions About Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain
Pelvic Pain Care at Miami Women’s Center
How do I know if my pelvic pain is normal or a sign of something more serious?
Mild cramping during your period can be normal, but pain that disrupts daily activities, worsens over time, or occurs outside your period is worth evaluating. Our team can help determine whether your pain points to endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or another cause.
How long does it typically take to get an endometriosis diagnosis?
Endometriosis is notoriously under-diagnosed, and many patients see multiple providers before getting answers. We work to shorten that timeline through detailed symptom review, imaging, and — when appropriate — minimally invasive diagnostic procedures.
Can pelvic pain be caused by something other than a gynecologic issue?
Yes. Conditions like urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal issues, or musculoskeletal pain can mimic gynecologic pelvic pain. Part of our evaluation involves ruling out non-gynecologic causes as well.
Are ovarian cysts always a cause for concern?
No. Many ovarian cysts are functional and resolve on their own without treatment. Others require monitoring or intervention depending on size, symptoms, and appearance on ultrasound.
What’s considered abnormal menstrual bleeding?
Bleeding that’s unusually heavy, lasts longer than 7 days, occurs between periods, or is accompanied by severe pain is generally considered abnormal and worth evaluating.
Do I need surgery to diagnose or treat endometriosis?
Not always. Many patients are managed successfully with medication and hormonal treatment first. Surgical diagnosis or treatment is considered when symptoms persist or fertility is affected.
How do I get evaluated for chronic pelvic pain?
Call (786) 931-6067 or request an appointment online to start with a thorough history and exam focused on identifying the source of your pain.
