What types of birth control options are available at Miami Women’s Center?
We provide a full spectrum of contraceptive choices, ranging from daily options to long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC). Our options include:
- Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC): Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) like Mirena®, Kyleena®, or Paragard® (the hormone-free copper IUD), and Nexplanon® sub-dermal arm implants.
- Hormonal Methods: Oral contraceptive pills (both combined and progestin-only “mini-pills”), birth control patches (Xulane®), and vaginal rings (NuvaRing®).
- Injectable Contraception: Depo-Provera® shots administered once every 12 weeks.
- Barrier & Emergency Options: Diaphragm fittings and emergency contraception counseling.
What is an IUD, and how long does it last?
An Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped plastic device that a healthcare provider gently inserts into your uterus during a quick, in-office procedure. IUDs are incredibly effective (over 99%) and require zero daily maintenance. Depending on the type you choose, they can remain in place and protect against pregnancy for 3 to 10 years. Hormonal IUDs can also significantly lighten your menstrual periods and reduce severe cramping. All IUDs are completely reversible and can be safely removed by your provider at any time if you decide you are ready to become pregnant.
How do I choose the best contraceptive method for my body?
During a consultation at Miami Women’s Center, your provider will evaluate several personal factors to find your ideal match. We review your medical history (such as your blood pressure and history of migraines), assess any current cycle issues (like heavy bleeding or irregular periods), discuss your daily schedule to see if you prefer a daily pill or a “set-it-and-forget-it” option, and clarify your timeline for wanting children in the future.
Can birth control help manage medical conditions besides preventing pregnancy?
Yes. Hormonal contraceptives are frequently prescribed as a highly effective treatment for various gynecological issues. They are commonly used to regulate unpredictable menstrual cycles, reduce abnormally heavy bleeding, manage severe menstrual cramps, and treat symptoms associated with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and uterine fibroids.
What to Expect During a Family Planning Consultation
A family planning visit at Miami Women’s Center is an interactive appointment tailored entirely to your reproductive health timeline:
- Comprehensive Health Screening: We check your blood pressure and review your personal and family medical history to rule out any risk factors before prescribing hormonal methods.
- Same-Day Care & Procedure Planning: If you choose an oral contraceptive, patch, or ring, we can often send the prescription to your pharmacy immediately. For LARC methods like IUDs or implants, we discuss the procedure, answer your questions, and coordinate your insertion appointment.
- Fertility Transition Support: If you are visiting us to stop using contraception to try to conceive, we seamlessly transition your visit into preconception counseling, providing guidance on optimizing your health for a future pregnancy.
