Frequently Asked Questions About Preventive Care
Preventive Care at Miami Women’s Center
How often should I schedule a preventive wellness visit?
Most women benefit from an annual wellness exam every year, even if a Pap smear or other specific screening isn’t due that particular year — the visit covers much more than just cervical screening.
What’s included in a typical preventive care visit?
A visit generally includes a health history review, vital signs, a clinical breast exam, a pelvic exam, and any due screenings such as a Pap smear, HPV test, or STI testing based on your age and risk factors.
Do I need a Pap smear every year?
No. Most low-risk women need a Pap smear every 3 years between ages 21–29, and every 3–5 years between 30–65 depending on whether it’s combined with HPV testing.
Can preventive visits catch conditions I don’t have symptoms for?
Yes — that’s exactly the point of preventive care. Conditions like HPV, early cervical changes, and some breast abnormalities often have no symptoms in early stages, which is why regular screening matters.
What if I’ve never had a well-woman exam before?
That’s completely fine. Your first visit will be a bit more thorough as we build your health history, but our team will guide you through every step so it feels comfortable and unhurried.
Is STI testing part of my regular wellness exam?
It can be, if it’s relevant to you or requested. Testing frequency depends on your age, number of partners, and personal risk factors — your provider can help determine what’s appropriate.
